Rachmaninov

A-Etudes-Tableaux, Songs. Melnikov, Brilowa (Harmonia Mundi)

MIXED BAGS: Lots of CDs these days combine repertoire in enterprising ways. Here, pianist Alexander Melnikov juxtaposes two late Rachmaninov piano opuses with a collection of songs from the same period. Mr. Melnikov, 35, now lives in England, but he has been collaborating with soprano Elena Brilowa since his student days in Russia.

BRIGHT HUES: In the Etudes-Tableaux and the Corelli Variations, Mr. Melnikov plays with astonishing clarity and in saturated colors – no hazy pastels for him. Still, the music brims over with passion. Ms. Brilowa's voice doesn't sound naturally rich, but she uses it with discriminating artistry, beautifully keyed in to Mr. Melnikov's delicate support.

BOTTOM LINE: Go exploring and discover that Rachmaninov composed more than just those popular concertos.
