Flute Sonatas

Philippa Davies (Avie)

BACH THE TUNESMITH: We don't hear the sonatas that J.S. Bach wrote for solo instrument and keyboard nearly as often as we might – perhaps because violinists or flutists don't tour with harpsichordists and are reluctant to perform them with piano. Those the composer wrote for the flute are some of his loveliest, most accessible creations.

THE MAGIC FLUTE: British flutist Philippa Davies makes a gorgeous sound on her period instrument. You could put it into wine lovers' terminology: "woody, fruity, delicate but strong." Maggie Cole, a virtuoso on the harpsichord in her own right, and cellist Allison McGillivray make sympathetic partners.

BOTTOM LINE: These sonatas might be Bach for easy listening, but they reward close attention as well.
