New York Fashion Week: After all these years, Brooke's still the 'jeans girl'

NEW YORK – Manhattan is bright, bold and beautiful, as are the designs on the spring 2009 runways.

From wispy, lighter-than-air dresses to va-va-voom bandage-wrapping numbers, there are plenty of options for spring dressing.

Follow all the action on and off the runway at dallasnews.com/style.

Party-hardy

What's more fabulous than a fashion show?

A fabulous fashion party, of course. Calvin Klein's 40th anniversary celebration on Sunday night brought out the industry's A-list.

Brooke Shields says she still gets repeatedly asked about her infamous 1980s ads for the company.

"People tell me all the time, 'You're the jeans girl,' " she says.

Justin Timberlake, with business partner Tracy Ayala, rocked out the Roseland Ballroom with the debut showing of their William Rast label. Entourage's Jeremy Piven and Kevin Connolly cheered in the front row.

Rising star

Designer Thakoon Panichgul's upcoming collaboration with Target had fashion tongues wagging, but he scored a bigger coup when Michelle Obama wore one of his dresses as Barack accepted the Democratic presidential nomination.

"It was such an honor," Thakoon said backstage Sunday. His spring designs, full of peek-a-boo blouses and beautiful rose and eyelash prints, were sweet and a little sinister.

Dallas shoppers can meet him in person at NorthPark Center's Fashion at the Park next month.

Role call

Forget Hollywood celebs! A-list athletes are taking over the front row. First it was Andy Roddick at Lacoste. On Sunday we ran into tennis ace Maria Sharapova and newbie Olympian (and North Texan) Nastia Liukin at Peter Som. The gymnast, who was sporting a sleeveless mustard-yellow Som dress, told us, "Most of the time I'm in leotards so I don't get many chances to dress up, but I was really happy with this one. I love the color!"
