CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR: Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman star in this true tale of a Texas congressman who funneled $1 billion into Afghanistan to help defeat the Soviets. Some sharp political humor tied to recent (and current) events, but it gets a little glib and overeager to wrap it all up. Directed by Mike Nichols.

THE SAVAGES: Writer and director Tamara Jenkins recognizes the difficulty of having to function as a mother or father to the person who raised you, and she depicts it with brutal honesty and absurd humor. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney deliver consistently nuanced performances in the lead roles. Also starring Philip Bosco and Peter Friedman.

CLOVERFIELD: Economical and visceral monster movie takes a while to get started, but once it does the craft and minimalist creativity make up for a lack of plot or explanation. In a nutshell: Something scary has its way with New York as five friends try to save one of their own across town. Stay away if whiplash handheld camera work makes you ill. Starring Michael Stahl-David, Lizzy Caplan, T.J. Miller and Jessica Lucas. Directed by Matt Reeves.

STARTING OUT IN THE EVENING: When a nervy grad student seeks out a forgotten novelist as the subject of her dissertation, an unlikely relationship is formed. As the sessions between writer and critic continue, both people reveal a yearning for satisfactions not easily obtained. Intelligent, involving and conspicuously adult, Starting Out in the Evening creates high drama from an unlikely source: writing. Starring Frank Langella, Lauren Ambrose, Lili Taylor and Adrian Lester. Directed by Andrew Wagner.

THE ORPHANAGE: A former resident of an orphanage returns to the house to convert it into a home for special-needs children. Then her son goes missing. The film takes too many twists toward the end, but where it goes is effectively frightening. Starring Belén Rueda, Fernando Cayo, Roger Príncep and Geraldine Chaplin. Directed by Juan Antonio Bayona.
