'Mermaid' takes top honor at AFI Dallas

Mermaid, the story of a girl with the ability to make others' dreams come true, was named the winner of the Target Ten Filmmaker Award for best narrative feature on Sunday by the AFI Dallas International Film Festival. The festival's other top prize, the Target Ten Filmmaker Award for best documentary, went to Iron Ladies of Liberia, which follows the first freely elected woman head of state in Africa. Each award comes with a $25,000 cash prize.

Other award winners were:

• MPS Studios Texas Filmmaker Award: Cook County ($20,000 in cash, goods and services).

• Current Energy Earth Friendly Award: Fields of Fuel ($10,000).

• HDNet Award for best feature shot in HD: Tracing Cowboys ($10,000).

• Best short film: The Second Line.

• Best student short: The Vulnerable Ones.

• Best animated short: Key Lime Pie.

• Audience award for best narrative feature: Amal.

• Audience award for best documentary: The Black List.

• Audience award for best short: A Day's Work.
