'Speed Racer' is fun for the whole family

Warner Bros. Pictures
Warner Bros. Pictures
The Mach 5 in Speed Racer

It's a candy-colored whirligig of a movie. But as you skip along the surface of its computer-generated collage of surreal sights and sophisticated silliness, there's some deep fun to be had.

What does that retro cellphone ringtone say about you?
It's the nature of both pop culture and people that we reveal ourselves and offer insights into our ever-changing media environment in the small, incidental choices we make as consumers and users of technology. As a recent entrant into the iPhone club, I set about engaging in a common ritual: pimping my phone.

Books turn famous Texans into paper dolls

Leila Hill
Famous Texas Men and Famous Texas Women

Texas is a big, colorful state with a big, colorful history full of big, colorful characters. The state has been a productive generator of celebrities since long before the celebrity-industrial complex came to dominate American public life. But two new books pose an interesting challenge: How many famous Texas men and women are so instantly and iconically recognizable that you can identify them based on their paper-doll representations? Based on the content of Famous Texas Men and Famous Texas Women, two new collections from "paper doll artist" Tom Tierney, the answer is not nearly as many as you might think.

There's no disputing the popularity of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon . It's sold between 15 and 40 million copies (depending on which source you believe) and it stayed on the Billboard chart for a record-breaking 14 years straight.

'Dancing:' Priscilla Presley stepping toward the door

ABC
Priscilla Presley with partner, Louis van Amstel

On Monday's "Latin night" edition of Dancing with the Stars, which host Tom Bergeron proclaimed "the sexiest night of the season," a surprising thing happened — nothing surprising happened. Kristi Yamaguchi delivered the best dance of the night with her slinky rumba; Priscilla Presley, provided the worst performance, a lifeless rumba that was more like Walking with the Stars.

Pilar and Deion Sanders' new reality show: 'We were tired of how African-Americans were portrayed'
Most people, when they reach a certain point in their lives and are looking for new challenges, might take up a hobby. Not Deion Sanders. The former football and baseball star, the only man to have played in both a Super Bowl and a World Series, the man who created the Prime Time persona, has done all the things a superstar athlete does after retiring. He's been a TV sports commentator, appeared in some high-profile commercials, written a book – all the usual stuff. And now he's joining the celebrity reality TV club with a new show on Oxygen, Deion and Pilar: Prime Time Love.

With strike over, TV viewers can get their fill of new and returning shows

ABC
Christina Applegate portrays Samantha, right, in a scene with actor Tim Russ in the ABC TV comedy series, Samantha Who.

It's been barely two months since the writers strike that shut down most TV production ended, and already it seems a dim memory of the distant past. That's partly because in our pop-culture overdrive, two months is an eternity, and partly because many of the shows most affected – Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report and the late-night talk shows – were back up and running almost immediately.

Hits and misses in 'Dancing With the Stars' lineup

Bob D'Amico / ABC
Edyta Sliwinska and Jason Taylor

Just as the flu season is winding down, dance fever is about to break out. And if it's anything like last fall, more than 20 million viewers can expect to catch it. It may not (quite) be the ratings juggernaut that Fox's American Idol is, but when it comes to guilty-pleasure silly fun, ABC's Dancing With the Stars is the clear winner. With a live orchestra, guest performers and, of course, all that ballroom dancing, the show is a 21st century take on an Ed Sullivan-style variety show. Let's break down some reasons to check out this season.

Tom Maurstad: Mariah Carey's video has a '30 Rock' moment

Associated Press
Mariah Carey and Jack McBray

The sultry screecher's new video, "Touch My Body" is on YouTube. It's a "story" video in which a GeekSquad-like VW bug pulls up to a palatial estate. A knock on the door, a barely dressed Mariah answers and we see that "CompuNerd" technician is none other than Jack McBray, though you may know him better as Kenneth Purcell, the cherubic country-boy intern from 30 Rock.
