Andrew Rangell's new recording lends his quirky touch to Bach

Bach

A-Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I. Andrew Rangell (Bridge)

ON THE ONE HAND: Andrew Rangell, who turns 60 this year, invited controversy even before he had recurring hand problems in the 1990s. The pianist sometimes pushes quirkiness to an extreme. He bends rhythms, punches out musical lines, adds seemingly capricious ornaments. Many listeners will find all this infuriating. If you thought Glenn Gould outrageous, just listen to this one.

ON THE OTHER: Mr. Rangell is never dull. He always finds something new to say about music that by now is very familiar to many listeners – and players. Bach's 48 preludes and fugues contain some of the most fascinating, and often sublime, music ever written. Mr. Rangell has lots of ideas about each of them, and I find them worth hearing.

BOTTOM LINE: Stir up some more debate by giving us the second book, please!
