True grit

The 1962 best-picture Oscar winner Lawrence of Arabia opens today at the Regent, debuting the Highland Park Village theater's series of classic films. The plan is to have one per month. Others include Gone With the Wind and Giant. The theater is open to suggestions for future classics.

Test of time

David Lean's epic study of enigmatic military leader T.E. Lawrence is both intimate and spectacular, with some of the finest visuals in cinema history. The film catapulted Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif to international stardom. Mr. O'Toole is still winning raves in films as varied as the current family-friendly Lassie and the upcoming, unconventional Venus, whereas Mr. Sharif now concentrates on his bridge championships.

Le sheik, c'est chic

Like all classics, Lawrence of Arabia has had its share of imitators – and parodies. In the latter category, one of the most memorable was Mad magazine's movie satire, which featured a resplendent O'Toole caricature dancing across the desert, white robes flowing, singing "I Feel Pretty" from West Side Story.
