Alan Peppard on Todd Wagner, Robert De Niro, Jack LaLanne and Jessica Simpson08:03 PM CDT on Wednesday, October 15, 2008Film producer Todd Wagner may be Dallas' most camera-shy billionaire, but he did step in front of the lens to appear next to his buddy Robert De Niro in the comedy What Just Happened?, opening Friday. Todd and his less-shy partner, Mark Cuban, executive-produced the film through their company, 2929 Productions. Based on the 2002 memoir by Hollywood producer Art Linson, What Just Happened? features Mr. De Niro as a frustrated producer watching his power dissipate as he tries to make a film with an overweight Bruce Willis, playing himself, who refuses to shave his beard. By the end of the film, Mr. De Niro's character has been so marginalized that a stylist at a Vanity Fair photo shoot keeps directing him to the edge of the frame. Keep your eyes peeled, because that stylist is played by Todd Wagner.
In the fast LaLanne
Fitness pioneer Jack LaLanne was born two months after the outbreak of World War I, and he is still going like the Energizer bunny. He was just in town celebrating his birthday at the Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas. In honor of Jack's 94th, Four Seasons pastry chef Randy Gehman made him a healthful birthday cake out of fruit and yogurt. Jack still works out two hours every day, and he outlived his two dogs, Happy and Smiley, who used to appear on his TV show. His wife, Elaine LaLanne, was with him for the recent Texas trip, where he was hosted by Parker College of Chiropractic and its president, Dr. Fabrizio Mancini.
Sophia, but no Jessica
FoxNews.com is making a tempest in a teapot about Jessica Simpson not showing at Sunday night's Hollywood Style Awards to pick up the Original Style Award. (She was probably caring for someone's broken pinkie.) What is interesting is that Rachel Bilson was also a no-show to get her Hollywood Style Icon Award. Instead, the award was given to actress Sophia Bush. Does anyone remember way, way back to one year ago when Sophia had a few dates with Jessica's man, Tony Romo ?
Wahlberg checks out the biturbo
Of the millions that Dallasites Lee and Ed Bailey have made with their more than 60 McDonald's franchises, some of it has found its way into their garage, where they have a nice selection from Rolls-Royce and Mercedes. The other night, Lee pulled into the driveway at the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek in her souped-up Mercedes S65, a car that yearns for the autobahn or late nights on the Tollway. When Lee got out of her car, she found herself eyeball to eyeball with Mark Wahlberg. "He was checking out my biturbo," she says. "I am referring to the car," she adds quickly.
