The staff takes real care with the food at this bare-bones, cash-only spot in a Richardson strip mall. Its tacos (with hand-made tortillas) are some of the best around.
You can tell much about the promise of a taqueria by what’s in the window, and at this popular sit-down Richardson spot, the sign featuring two adorable goats and the phrase “tortillas hechas a mano” (handmade tortillas) speaks volumes. Tacos de chivo (goat) are the draw, with shredded, nicely gamey, deep-flavored goat meat folded into large, floppy, fabulous corn tortillas that somehow seem to get better on each visit. Meanwhile, La Candelaria’s carnitas — crisp-edged, moist, small bits of pork — are some of the best in town. The tacos come naked; for dressing them up, bowls of chopped onion and cilantro land on the table when you’re seated, along with bowls of lime wedges and sliced radish and fiery red and green salsas. Cash only. Leslie Brenner/Guide
