Leslie Brenner Recommends

The $9.99 per-person lunch buffet (weekdays only), is one of North Texas’ most delicious bargains, with plenty to delight vegetarians as well as omnivores. I love the house-made pita bread, and Afrah’s hummus is some of the best around. House-made baklava and ice cream in exotic flavors are wonderful, too.

From the bright, lemony tabbouleh, to the smooth-as-can-be hummus and garlicky baba ghanoush, to salads starring romano beans, eggplant, tomatoes and cucumber and more, the $9.99 weekday lunch buffet at Afrah offers one of the most appetizing arrays of vegetarian dishes in North Texas. And that’s just the cold starters! Take another plate and return for hot Lebanese treats: perfect falafel; stewed okra and tomatoes; tender roasted cauliflower; bright-flavored stuffed grape leaves; za’atar pie. The signs identifying each dish also mention whether it’s vegetarian (“veg”) — you’ll find them on the majority of offerings; many are vegan. Don’t forget the just-baked pita.

Desserts on the buffet aren’t quite as exciting — chocolate mousse and cubes of watermelon were on hand recently. But do spring for a house-made ice cream (not included in the price of the buffet), in dreamy flavors like cardamom or pistachio.

Offerings on the regular menu (dinner and weekend lunches) don’t have nearly so many vegetarian choices. But the weekday lunch buffet is a local treasure. Leslie Brenner/Guide
