High five! Casual bar and restaurant with big patio now open on Henderson

Comfy, casual and relaxed -- that's the vibe of Henderson Avenue's newest watering hole, High Fives.

The bar and restaurant, which opened quietly last week, is a joint venture between several of the guys behind So & So's and the Standard Pour, an upscale eatery and cocktails hub that recently earned three stars from the News' food critic, Leslie Brenner.

High Fives is very different from its Uptown siblings and that's why co-owner Brandon Hays says he didn't want to make a fuss about the opening. Even the bar's name speaks to the laid-back atmosphere Hays and his cohorts Brian Rutt, Phil Schanbaum, James Hamous, and Jonathan Rosenberg have created.

It's about "five guys trying to come together and have a good time," Hays says. "We didn't want it to seem like Uptown was coming to Henderson."

High Fives took over the former Glass Boot Biergarten space, special because of its expansive patio and indoor-outdoor feel. The restaurant can hold roughly 260 people. The owners added a second bar on the patio, as well as a game of cornhole and two stunning murals on the outside walls. (Technically one mural is on the side of a building formerly known as the Slip-Inn dive bar. Hays and company are involved in the reinvention of that space too, but mums the word at the moment.)

In the way of food, High Fives offers a selection of sandwiches, salads, flatbread pizzas and charcuterie. The kitchen begins full service Monday. Behind the bar, bartenders shake up a variety of $10 specialty cocktails and serve a select list of draft craft beers and a few red and white wines. (See the menus in the photo gallery below.)
