Even in defeat on national television Monday night, the Hoffman family of Carrollton could not be defeated.
In an attempt to grab more viewers, ABC presented a one-time special DanceBattle America show on Monday after the season premiere of Dancing With the Stars.
The network selected eight dancing teams to compete. One of them was the Hoffmans, who achieved national notoriety after their kitchen dance video earlier this year went viral and attracted 12 million views. TV producers liked that.
On the show, the Hoffmans competed against the Adams family of Atlanta. The Adams family wore drill team gear. The Hoffmans – playing off their Texas heritage – wore Texas shirts and danced around a BBQ cooker.
The Adams family won, but papa Hoffman was elated anyway.
"The biggest reason we're doing this," he told a national television audience, "is because the kids are growing up and getting married. The Hoffmans are starting to expand. We have a lot of great memories. And it's getting to the point where we're done, and we have to let them go. This is the last hurrah."
The Hoffman family's dancing career launched in their kitchen this year, when they made an impromptu dance video in their kitchen during a Texas ice storm. The point was to show how families can make their own fun in tough times.
The video struck a giant nerve as millions of Americans said the dance video inspired them.
That's why even in a loss, the Hoffmans earned a big win.
