Here's the weird selfie app everyone is using, and here's what Texas celebs look like with it

You might have noticed an influx of bizarre selfies on your social media feeds this week -- especially Twitter. All of the sudden everybody seems to be sharing photos of themselves looking like they came straight out of a very kawaii anime.

They're all using Meitu, an app from China that allows you to take photos of yourself and make them glamorous. Or, as they put it, they "instantly give your selfies a hand-drawn look" and "grant you cross-dimensional beauty."

I don't know about the "hand-drawn" part. Or the "beauty" part, really. Still, the app is weird, fun and weirdly addictive.

It's available for free on both iOS and Android, and seems clearly marketed at women due in part to the fact that when you take a photo of yourself, it tells you to make sure your hair is down. It definitely works on men, though.

What it won't work on is non-humans. It also won't work on pictures that contain more than one human face. It's really looking for selfies.

While it's new to those of us in North America and Europe, Meitu has reportedly been one of China's most popular apps for a good long time.

There's been some questions about the app's security, though. Particularly the Android version, which seems to request permission for far more access to your phone than it should need.

That hasn't stopped it from becoming very popular very quickly. It's the No. 1 item on "Trending" when you go to search the App Store on your phone.

If you don't want to download it yourself but still want to see some fun results, don't worry. We took the bullet for you and have given a bunch of local celebrities a Meitu makeover. You're welcome.
