April 1 is a weird day for Wayback Burgers to unveil new 'High Protein Cricket Milkshake'

If you were going to add a masterfully blended "High Protein Cricket Milkshake" to your restaurant's menu, April 1 is probably not the day to do it. But, that's exactly what retro-style neighborhood meat joint, Wayback Burgers, alleges it will unveil tomorrow at all locations. On April Fool's Day.

Turns out, the closest Wayback Burger to D-FW is in Waxahachie, which is a straight shot down I-35 and, you know, not the world's worst drive if a 22 oz. bug drink costing $4.50 ranks super-high on your list of this week's must-dos. Please note, we're talking crickets here, not grasshoppers.

Cursory Google research suggests that some humans out there are, in fact, turning to cricket-based protein supplements. No lie. The insects contain, apparently, "substantially more iron than beef" and they have "marginal environmental impact," producing "virtually no methane." Nobody tell the cattle lobby, or this could get ugly.

According to a not-at-all-dubious press release, a 3.5 ounce serving of cricket (powder? flour?) contains 50 grams of protein. Which would be fantastic, if it were true. Seems like it's more like 12.9 for that amount, according to several sources like this one and this one. Anybody who works out might agree that's still not bad. In fact, sign us up for a try-out.

This is actually more insane than a cricket milkshake. And, we know it's for real.

Nominally convinced that eating cricket-based protein products is a good idea, it still makes us wonder why a burger joint specializing in a "Triple Triple Burger" - that's 9 patties, 9 slices of American cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes, folks - is suddenly marketing to health enthusiasts.

The presser also says that Wayback Burger tested the cricket shake in "multiple markets over the past six months" and it created such an "overwhelming demand" they decided to add it to the regular menu. Which also serves a "BBQ Crunch Burger" with barbecue flavored potato chips smushed between the bun and patty.
