Woman dies after struck by van on I-635 in Dallas; multiple lanes closed during rush hour
It was unclear what time the lanes would reopen.
A woman was fatally struck by a vehicle early Thursday on I-635 in Dallas, causing the closure of all eastbound lanes on Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway through morning rush hour traffic.
The crash occurred shortly before 1 a.m. in the 9500 block of LBJ Freeway, police said.
A preliminary investigation determined a woman was driving eastbound in the far right lane on the highway near the Skillman Street exit ramp when she drove between two temporary construction barriers, hit a plastic barrier and veered back onto the freeway, a department spokesperson said Thursday. The woman parked in the second to right lane and exited her vehicle.
A van also traveling eastbound struck the woman as she was standing in the doorway of her vehicle, police said.
The woman, who has not yet been publicly identified, died at the scene.
The driver of the van stopped at the scene and remained there until police arrived.
The investigation is ongoing.
The Texas Department of Transportation incident tracker listed all lanes closed as of 9:30 a.m.
About a dozen Dallas police units also remained on the scene late into the morning as traffic remained backed up for miles.
