Blow, cat, blow: Jazz at the Philharmonic reissues capture a seminal moment in jazz

Jazz at the Philharmonic, which started in 1944 at Philharmonic Hall in Los Angeles, must have been something to see. It remains something to hear, and you can do just that thanks to a newly reissued vinyl series from Verve. Each album is divided into two parts: an all-star jam session on one side, and individual sets on the other. The talent is top-flight: Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Lester Young, Buddy Rich, Coleman Hawkins and Oscar Peterson are among the heavy hitters on display. These are genius-heavy blowing sessions featuring some of the biggest names in jazz. Grab a partner and cut a rug.
