Food trucks may have started the mobile retail movement, but these days there's a shop of almost every kind on wheels. Trucks have come through Dallas-Fort Worth slinging sangria and selfie pancakes, fashion and makeup, even Hello Kitty and Simpsons memorabilia.
So of course there's one that sells vinyl.
Rock musician extraordinaire Jack White launched the Rolling Record Store at South By Southwest festival in Austin in 2011 as a mobile version of his Third Man Records store, so named for the label he founded in 2009. Third Man has two brick and mortar locations in Nashville and Detroit, but every so often the Rolling Record Store makes the music and merchandise sold in-store available nationwide when it goes on tour. (It's even visited Dallas before.)
The Rolling Record Store is following Jack White to several concert dates this spring, and making a couple of stops in Dallas. It will be parked at Good Records in Dallas on Sunday, April 29 from noon to 3 p.m. before making its way to the Bomb Factory in Deep Ellum, where White performs that night. (He also performs there on Friday, April 27; tickets to both shows are still available.)
What might you find at the Third Man Records Rolling Record Store?
For one, White's exceptional new album, Boarding House Reach, which came out in March.
Funky bass lines, gritty guitar, pulsing percussion and some other unexpected elements (Jack White raps?) keep listeners guessing -- and grooving -- throughout the whole record. In a recent review, Rolling Stone said it "manages to feel fresh, original, and still deeply rooted in history."
The truck, which is outfitted with a couch and a DJ booth, also sells merch from other artists on the Third Man label, such as Margo Price and Pokey LaFarge.
Whatever you buy, be sure to snap a picture of Jack White's truck because you won't be able to get one of the artist himself in concert. At least not with your cell phone.
