The big nominations for the 60th Grammy Awards reveal a predictable, but no less stellar, power trio: Jay-Z (eight nominations), Kendrick Lamar (seven) and Bruno Mars (six) will battle for the night's top awards, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year.

Why Jay-Z's new album '4:44' is one of his best — and why you'll want to see him Nov. 7 in Dallas

Jay-Z and Mars will also face off in the Song of the Year category, while Jay-Z's 4:44 will square off against Lamar's DAMN. in the Rap Album of the Year category.

But those three powerful men in music aren't the only ones grabbing big honors.

In a happy surprise, Childish Gambino, the hip-hop project of actor and comedian Donald Glover, scored five nominations, including spots in the coveted Album of the Year category for his Awaken My Love! LP. The unexpected nom is similar to last year, when low-selling country artist Sturgill Simpson crashed the grandest category of the night with his soul-infused A Sailor's Guide to Earth.

In terms of North Texas talent, powerhouse female singers with roots near Dallas nabbed a few spots.

Dallas singer Jazzmeia Horn, now a jazz singer, changed her tune on 'old people's music'

Arlington native Maren Morris, last year's Grammy winner for Best New Artist, gained a nod for "I Could Use a Love Song" in the Best Country Solo Performance group. Joining her in that category is Lindale's own Miranda Lambert for "Tin Man," a song that she co-wrote with SMU grad Jack Ingram. That song was also entered into the Country Song (songwriter's award) category.

Burleson native Kelly Clarkson landed in the category for Best Pop Solo Performance with "Love So Soft," and in the Jazz realm, Booker T. Washington graduate Jazzmeia Horn was nominated for Best Jazz Vocal Album with A Social Call. If you don't know Horn's music, you should. Read more about her here.

Also, producer J. White is named in a songwriters award for Best Rap Song for Cardi B's "Bodak Yellow." White is from Mesquite.

The 60th Grammy Awards will be awarded in New York City on Jan. 28, 2018.
