Spooner Oldham — 'When a Man Loves a Woman,' 'Mustang Sally' and others — spotted playing free concert at Dallas' Good Records

Spooner Oldham, a legendary musician and 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, performed for free in front of about two-dozen people Sunday afternoon in Lower Greenville.

Pegi Young -- a brilliant songwriter and, yes, Neil Young's ex-wife -- recruited Oldham and other veteran musicians for her current tour, which included a free in-store performance at Dallas' Good Records.

A legendary session player and songwriter since the '60s, Oldham played on classic songs like Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman" and Aretha Franklin's "I Never Loved a Man." Over the years, he has also toured and recorded with Bob Dylan, Joe Cocker, Jackson Browne, Bob Seger, Neil Young and Drive-By Truckers.

Good Records frequently gets great acts for its free "Live From the Astroturf" music series. Big names like Conor Oberst, St. Vincent and Kurt Vile have played short sets to promote new albums.

Heck, even Alice Cooper once performed on the pink faux grass.

Sunday was a rare treat. Young's band also includes Kelvin Holly, a guitarist who has worked with Little Richard, Bobby Bland and Gregg Allman. On bass, Shonna Tucker was in Drive-By Truckers for years and has recorded with Jason Isbell, her ex-husband. Drummer Phil Jones toured with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in the '80s and performed with many other big names over the years, including Keith Richards and Robert Plant.

After a show at Dan's Silverleaf in Denton Saturday night, Pegi Young & the Survivors treated Good Records' shoppers to an hour-long set. Most of the songs were from their excellent new record, Raw, but a bluesy cover of "These Boots Were Made for Walkin'" was a highlight.

After the world-class band finished an electrifying set, Oldham said he would be working with Sheryl Crow on her next album once the tour ends.
