Jimmy Buffett announces June 10 show in Frisco, with the opening act who canceled last year: ZZ Top

For five of the past seven years, trop-rock living legend Jimmy Buffett has played a concert in May in Dallas-Fort Worth. It's a thing: Around Memorial Day Weekend, give or take a week or so, Parrotheads flock to land-locked North Texas to party like they're on Spring Break at the beach.

In 2017, this faux beach party will still take place, coconut bras and all, but not until June 10, at Frisco's Toyota Stadium.

Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band have been intermittently announcing shows that include stops in Las Vegas and at Wrigley Field in Chicago. (For weeks, serious Buffett fans have been guesstimating when the annual Frisco show would take place.)

Buffett's gig each year in Frisco has brought fans from near and far to North Texas. Hundreds camp out in RVs in the parking lot for the weekend. In years past, some have partied in parked boats or set up elaborate stages for grass-skirted fans to dance and drink upon. Because of the parking lot party -- which is not allowed at every Buffett concert -- this annual Frisco concert is a destination for longtime fans of this "Son of a Son of a Sailor." It's easy to get swept up in the good-time tide.

Of note, ZZ Top will be the opening act at the June 10 concert. In 2016, ZZ Top postponed its tour -- and canceled the Buffett opening gig -- because Dallas-born lead singer Dusty Hill was recovering from a fractured shoulder. While Jerry Jeff Walker made for a fine replacement, the concern was palpable at last year's Frisco concert. Those fans will likely appreciate the news that ZZ Top is expected to return.
