Art of Rap Festival featuring Ice-T, Public Enemy at Gexa on July 16 is officially canceled

Updated on July 13, 2016 at 10:37 a.m.: Live Nation has announced the official cancellation of this week's Art of Rap festival at Gexa Energy Pavilion.

According to the press release, "refunds for all tickets purchased will be available at point of purchase." No official reason was given but one can only imagine that discretion reared its graceful head.

Previous: It seems as if the Art of Rap show scheduled for July 16 at Gexa Energy Pavilion has been cancelled.

Official word hasn't come from concert promoter Live Nation yet, but all indications are that the show will not go on. The image on the tour's official Facebook page cover image has been updated and the Dallas date is no longer on it. The Austin date on July 17 was officially canceled per a release on Monday night; only refunds were offered, which probably means no make-up date.

When the mass water gun fight at Klyde Warren Park was canceled in the wake of the shootings  last week, one might have figured all bets were off for a show that featured some of hip-hop's most incendiary and indelible songs, such as "Cop Killer," "911 is a Joke" and "Fight the Power."

(There has also been some ado about the Dallas gunman's picture with former Public Enemy group member Professor Griff, who has found himself in the position of having to deny any ties. Griff is not on this tour; he left the group -- or was fired, according to who you ask -- more than 20 years ago.)

Ice-T and Public Enemy made those songs in response to what was happening around them at the time -- again more than 25 years ago -- but both the group and the man are conscious performers and have proven responsible and aware. For those who were looking forward to the concert, which was bound to also drop some knowledge, they and the audience might have had a chance to prove that.
