Janis Joplin in the documentary "Festival Express"

Think Film

Today marks what would have been the 73rd birthday of legendary Texas-born rocker Janis Joplin. I like to imagine the possibilities of a take-no-b.s., 70-something Janis ranting on Twitter, dropping truth bombs on Stephen Colbert's show, having her own branded liquor and just being generally awesome.

That version of a modern-day Janis and all other potential versions -- good and bad -- will have to remain in our imaginations, as Joplin died of a heroin overdose on Oct. 4, 1970 in Hollywood. She was 27 years old.

To commemorate what could have been, here's a playlist of 12 essential Janis Joplin songs. Find them all in a Spotify playlist at the bottom.
