Channel surfers: Denton band Dome Dwellers play in giant TV tonight

Remember the kid from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? No, not Charlie.

Mike Teavee wanted nothing more than to be on, or rather in, television. It didn't work out too great for Mike.

But Denton indie rock band Dome Dwellers are hoping to get the golden ticket, this time by playing in an oversized television for the release of its second album, "Ivory Tower" at 9 p.m. tonight at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios.

Since November of 2012, Dome Dwellers have been cycling the local scene in Denton. With a sound taking cues from experimental, psychedelic and art rock, Dome Dwellers like to joke about being an "avant-garage" band, since it embraces garage rock culture and never turns down an opportunity to get loud and shake things up.

The band is made up of Michael Slack (guitar/vocals) Davis Gore (drums) and Cullen Dean (bass).

As part of a collaborative effort with do-it-yourself music venue mastermind Chris Cotter, Dome Dwellers' performance is the first episode in a new concert series, 'Transcend.' The episode's title? "TV in Your Mind."

"The visual component will revolve around TVs," the band said. "With the help of our friend and local artist Mick Burson, Chris and the band built a giant TV prop in our driveway."

So, when the show gets started tonight, Dome Dwellers will climb inside and go live. Complementing the performance will be psychedelic visuals from local video artist Brian Tomerlin and old school tube TVs surrounding the setup.

"We're headlining the show with our friends Criminal Birds and Trai Bo rounding out the lineup," the band said. "It should be quite the experience."

The band's new album, "Ivory Tower" was recorded during the summer of 2014 in Allen, mixed in Fort Worth and mastered in Chicago.

The band is hoping the new album will open the floodgates for new fans, likening themselves to groups like Dirty Projectors, Battles and The Flaming Lips.

"The hardest part about this process is getting it to sound right and keep the recordings true to what we set out for," the band said. "On this most recent album, we got pretty close."

With classes starting back up at the University of North Texas, the band doesn't have immediate plans to tour, but will be making short treks to Oklahoma and Austin later this year, with a lengthy national tour planned for 2016.

"To anyone who has never heard Dome Dwellers, this is for you," the band said. "Listen with an open mind and an open heart."
