Coco will be available to stream on Netflix May 29.  This story about a Mexican boy who goes on a journey on Dia de Los Muertos to find his ancestors pulled at my heartstrings with its storytelling.

It was the first time Pixar focused on a Mexican family. The symbolism throughout the film is unapologetically Mexican, from grandma's spankings with la chancla (a flip-flop) to cultural icons like actors Pedro Infante and Jorge Negrete, artist Frida Kahlo and luchador El Santo.

Co-director Adrian Molina told Al Dia Dallas that the team took six years to create Coco. Getting it right was important.

"I wanted the characters we put on the screen to represent the people I know in real life, my family, my friends and my co-workers," Molina said.

That care paid off at the box office. Coco set a record in Mexico for being the highest grossing film of all time and recently was the No. 1 movie during Thanksgiving weekend in the United States.

It went on to win an Oscar for Best Animated Film and Best Original Song for "Remember Me."
