New Erykah Badu drama 'The Land' will open the Dallas International Film Festival

The Dallas International Film Festival has announced its opening night gala, and it looks like a refreshingly unsafe choice. Drum roll please...

The Land, which played Sundance in January and features Dallas' own Erykah Badu, is a drama about four skateboarding Cleveland teens who get caught in the web of a local drug queen-pin. Badu isn't the film's only hip-hop pedigree: Nas is an executive producer. Also among the cast is Moises Arias, who starred in the 2013 DIFF favorite The Kings of Summer. DIFF artistic director James Faust saw the film at Sundance and was immediately smitten.

Badu is expected to attend the premiere, which will unfold April 14 at the Dallas City Performance Hall. Check the festival website for more info.
