First trailer for 'Star Trek Beyond' sets phasers to fast and furious

When original director J.J. Abrams reinvigorated the Star Trek film franchise in 2009, we were treated to crazy action, a wonderful ensemble cast and lots and lots of trademark lens flare. And 2013's follow-up Star Trek Into Darkness made solid use of the newly established universe, bringing in baddie Benedict Cumberbatch and inspiration from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

But now, with Abrams out of the director's chair and in a galaxy far, far away, it's time for Fast & Furious franchise director Justin Lin to take the reins. In the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond, the muscle car legacy shines bright, and Lin's work with large casts should make this one for the action movie books.

The trailer gives us a taste of the new tone for the film, which will focus more on adventure, inspired by the classic Star Trek television show. While the last two movies had large space battles and lots of lasers, this will be more about alien life and the nooks and crannies of the Star Trek universe.

We get updated glimpses of the crew, including Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Scotty and Bones, with some quick shots of a few of the new characters. There's Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) playing what looks to be a friendly and the unnamed villain played by Idris Elba (Prometheus, Beasts of No Nation). It took us a couple of times to find them, though, as they are both in heavy makeup and prosthetics.

While the trailer brings the action and a bit of nostalgia with the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" (played in the intro to the first film), Trekkies abroad weren't feeling any Star Trek vibes from this, citing the influence of director Justin Lin. They took to Twitter to voice their concerns.

Of course, we'll all have to wait just a little bit longer to make our decisions when Star Trek Beyond hits theaters on July 22, 2016.
