Netflix raises its main subscription price to $9.99 per month for new members (for now)

Most people seem to love their Netflix accounts. Netflix is hoping they love it enough to pay $1 more per month for it.

Effective immediately, the monthly rate for Netflix's HD, two-stream digital subscription (the one most people mean when they just say "Netflix" these days) is going up to $9.99 per month -- an increase from $8.99 per month. That plan lets two users on the same account watch Netflix in high definition at the same time. A cheaper, standard definition plan is available for $7.99/month.

CNBC broke the news to the Twitter masses after Netflix's stoke price rose.

Here's the catch: Netflix says that, for right now, the new price only affects new members. If you already have a Netflix subscription you will be grandfathered in to the old price ... for awhile. According to Bloomberg, users have a grace period "of varying lengths" before they will be affected by the new, higher price.
