Steven Spielberg to direct film based on hit sci-fi novel 'Ready Player One'

Austin-based author Ernest Cline's fan-favorite sci-fi novel Ready Player One is headed to the big screen, and Steven Spielberg will be directing. Deadline reports that this will be Spielberg's first project with Warner Bros. since 2001's A.I. Artificial Intelligence.

The book takes place in the relatively near future of 2044, is a virtual reality-based packed with references to pop culture from the 1970s and 80s, from video games to TV to music to movies. Warner Bros. picked up the film rights before the book was even on store shelves.

Deadline also theorizes that, because much of the book's focus is on making you feel as if you're playing a VR video game, WB and Spielberg might attempt to make use of new, emerging film technologies in an effort to achieve the same effect -- perhaps something that goes beyond normal 2D or even 3D film.

Whatever form the film finally takes, the book's author is excited to have Spielberg on board.
