Sarah Blaskovich Recommends

Tate's manages to serve interesting cocktails without pretension. Park yourself on the patio on a nice evening and you'll find a rare spot in Uptown where you can hear yourself think -- and talk -- with friends or a significant other. Light bites are available if you want them, but you don't: Just tell the bartender your spirit of choice and he or she will likely whip up something just right.

Founder J.W. Tate has moved back to North Carolina, but the cocktails are still terrific at Tate’s, a no-nonsense, straight-ahead craft cocktail bar in Uptown. Lately, I loved a Lagavulin Old-Fashioned, dressed up with burdock bitters and dandelion bitters and topped with a float of Laphroaig Quarter Cask. It’s a pricey pour at $18, but ask for it on a Whiskey Wednesday, when all straight whiskeys and whiskey old-fashioneds are half-price, and it’s yours for $9. The Oaxacan old-fashioned is another delicious way to go, should you find yourself in the mood for mescal. (Yes, it is all the rage these days.) More summery is a Papa Doble, with Flor d’Caña rum, lime juice, Luxardo Maraschino and a touch of grenadine. — Leslie Brenner/Guide
