How to get free trips and rideshare discounts on Thanksgiving and Black Friday in D-FW

Voice-activated purchases. Same-day delivery. Chauffeurs at the click of a button. The future is now, and one ride-share company, Lyft, boasts insider knowledge on where the future of holiday gift-giving is headed in 2018.

Despite the fact that shopping looks dramatically different than it did in, say, 1998, you might be shocked to learn that Dallasites still endure long lines, cold weather and big crowds in hopes of procuring deep discounts during that strange post-Thanksgiving time known as Black Friday.

But, you likely won't be surprised that many have turned to ride-sharing apps in order to circumnavigate parking conundrums and highway hassles. (Or, at least, we can pass off those headaches while scrolling through Instagram from the comfort of a back seat.)

Sounds like a great idea, right? It is, until you imagine trying to jam a giant stuffed panda into a stranger's trunk. Human brains weren't designed for the unique calculus required to eyeball whether a framed triptych or stainless steel gas grill will fit through the hatch of a Kia Soul.

Still, Lyft feels confident. The company has even offered a code -- DFWTHANKS -- good for 35 percent off a ride between Nov. 22 and Nov. 24. There's a limited quantity available, according to the website, and other terms and restrictions.

Also of note: Lyft says the night before Thanksgiving is sometimes called "Drinksgiving" or "Blackout Wednesday" due to the disproportionately high amount of DUI stops in many cities. Yikes.

"To show our continued commitment to reducing drunk driving in Texas, we are offering $50,000 in free rides," the company says, via a blog post. You can get a free ride between noon on Nov. 21 and 3 a.m. on Nov. 23 with the code RIDESMARTTHANKS.

But, back to Black Friday.

Where to go? What to buy?

We'll leave that second question to you. According to a statement, Lyft compiled previous years' data to determine which retailers and shopping centers are the "top Black Friday destinations in D-FW."

Interestingly enough, No. 2 on the list, Galleria Dallas, has announced that most of its retailers will not open on Thanksgiving Day in 2018.

  1. Walmart
  2. Galleria Dallas
  3. NorthPark Center
  4. Target
  5. Parks at Arlington Mall
  6. Stonebriar Centre
  7. Town East Mall
  8. Irving Mall
  9. Best Buy
  10. The Shops at Willow Bend
