New Starbucks drink Witch's Brew comes topped with green 'lizard scales'

As I took a first sip of Starbucks' new purple frappuccino, Witch's Brew, a barista stopped me. She'd forgotten the final ingredient, a shake of green stuff on top.

"What's that?" I asked.

"Lizard scales," she chirped. She was back with the next customer before I could ask anything more.

The Witch's Brew Creme Frappuccino is Starbucks' limited-time-only Halloween drink. It's a beautiful color purple — so vibrant that people stopped me on my walk to ask what (in the world) it was.

The lizard scales are, in fact, green-colored sugar, according to an ingredients list. And Starbucks would prefer you call the purple part of the drink "toad's breath." We'll do all of that, fine, but you can't make us call the slimy, floating chia seeds "bat warts." They seem more like boogers.

Despite the purple and green, the flavor of the drink is a third color: orange. Witch's Brew tastes like a dreamsicle and is made like other frapps, with milk, syrup, powder and ice tossed in a blender.

Kids are going to beg their parents for this drink, I can already tell.

The real scare here might just be the price and calorie count: $5.90 for a 16-ounce Witch's Brew (called a grande at Starbucks), clocking in at 390 calories, with 58 grams of carbs and 53 grams of sugar.

At least it tastes better than last year's Zombie Frappuccino, which one of our staffers called a "nightmare." The Witch's Brew won't give you bad dreams. Just brain freeze.

Available as of Oct. 25 at participating Starbucks stores all over the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The one we purchased was at a Starbucks in downtown Dallas.
