The cool, crisp air and refreshing temperatures can only mean one thing: fall is finally here. Bring on the pumpkin spice lattes, sweaters and boots, and bike rides. Yes, bike rides. If you're new to the cycling scene, fall is a great time to get into gear and test drive this fun (and free) outdoor hobby.

There are a slew of bike shops across Dallas-Fort Worth, including the new Deep Ellum shop, Local Hub, which opened temporarily this summer. The grand opening is slated for late December. One of the owners of Local Hub, Kristie Holt, shared how fun social bike rides can be through a recent email interview.

Hit the ground running (or cycling) on these D-FW trails

"Bike riding can be a different experience sharing it with other people," said Holt. "Social rides are a great place to meet new people and an easy way to explore cities and neighborhoods the best way, by bicycle."

Most rides are free, unless you stop at a bar for a cold brew or a bite to eat, which is typical for many of the local social rides. The location, length of ride and size of the group all depend on which ride you choose, so Holt says to try different rides to find a group that fits your style of biking and fellow riders.

If you're new to the cycling world, here a few tips from Holt to get your wheels spinning:

  • Get comfortable on your first bike before joining a group ride.
  • Expect to ride close to other people whom you don't know very well.
  • Make friends with the experienced riders and ask them all the questions you can think of about riding bikes. Bike riders love to talk about gear and bikes and will be more than happy to give advice to new riders.
