Watch this adorable video of a woman trying virtual reality, then get excited for VR

This year, high-end virtual reality devices from companies like HTC, Sony and Oculus (owned by Facebook) will be hitting store shelves. But they won't be cheap. VR may be the eventual future of entertainment, social networking and more, but it's not ready for mass market penetration yet. So why get excited?

Because even today's lesser VR experiences can cause reactions like this.

That video has been going viral on Facebook ever since Calup Surgener posted it on Christmas Day. In it, he straps his iPhone to a rudimentary VR headset (roughly equivalent to what you get from Google Cardboard) and then lets his mother experience the joy of viewing a museum experience about dinosaurs. Virtually.

It's far from the first video in which somebody springs VR on their unsuspecting loved ones, but it's one of the best because it's attainable. If you have a good enough smart phone (recent iOS or Android phones, mostly) you can get a headset for less than $50 in most cases. The stuff you can do with that technology is admittedly limited and gimmicky (it's a lot of 3D, 360-degree videos and occasional games), but it's still cool. And as evidenced by this mom's reaction (and the reaction to her reaction), it's also still fresh.
