Screen Scene: Get out and get some on Free Comic Book Day

Free Comic Book Day is back May 2, and once again, the annual lovefest dovetails with the opening of a superhero movie event: The Avengers: Age of Ultron (PG-13, 142 mins.) opens wide May 1.

In addition to giving away free copies of comics such as DC Comics: Divergence, The Phantom, Teen Titans Go! and The All-New, All-Different Avengers, a couple of local comic stores are pulling out all the stops. Keith's Comics is giving away free ice cream, and hosting its first Cosplay Carnival from 2 to 5 p.m. at Pocket Sandwich Theatre, 5400 E. Mockingbird Lane in Mockingbird Central Plaza, Dallas; the location in North Dallas ( 17610 Midway Road) will host local artists Pat Binder and Keith Wilson along with sketching for children from noon to 3. Red Pegasus Games & Comics will have cosplayers, giveaways and a raffle amid a block party at the new store, open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., at 208 W. Eighth St., Dallas.

Red Pegasus co-owner Kenneth Denson says the new store opened as a pop-up and recently moved to the permanent location. There are other activities in store for those who drop by, but he wants it to be a surprise. I was all up in his business, so just get comfortable when you get there; I know but you won't be disappointed.

I doubt you'll be disappointed at any of the stores for Free Comic Book Day. Participating stores in Big D include: Zeus Comics and Collectibles, 1334 Inwood Road; Lone Star Comics, Games and Gifts,  6780 Abrams Road; Awesome Comics,  8420 Abrams Road, Suite 202; and Titan Comics,  3128 Forest Lane. Red Pegasus is getting a head start on the festivities: On Thursday for the 10 p.m. showing of Age of Ultron, the store will have a pop-up in the lobby at Texas Theatre. The owners will also have giveaways and trivia before introducing the film to a salivating audience. OK, maybe that's just me. The salivating part. (Even though I've already seen it...)
