First test footage and plot details of 'Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One' released

One of the panels at this weekend's Star Wars Celebration event in Anaheim was "A Conversation with Gareth Edwards," who is the director of the first Star Wars spin-off film, Rogue One. For those not in attendance, StarWars.com liveblogged the whole thing, giving us our first glimpse as to what to expect when the movie hits theaters in 2016.

First, Lucasfilm has decided to call these spin-offs "Anthology" films.  Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said during the panel that  Lucas "Was really interested in exploring all the stories that existed inside the universe."

We were also given the official description/plot for the movie:

"A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans in the Star Wars Anthology film, Rogue One."

As Star Wars fans can probably guess from that plot, Edwards confirmed that the movie takes place after Episode III (Revenge of the Sith) but before Episode IV (A New Hope). "It comes down to a group of individuals who don't have magical powers that have to somehow bring hope to the galaxy," he said, implying that there would be no Jedi in this movie.

It was also confirmed that Felicity Jones will be playing a Rebel soldier, as has been rumored.

Filming has not yet begun, but they will be shooting in the UK and around the world. This obviously means there is no trailer for them to share yet, but they did bring along some test footage showing a TIE Fighter flying over a jungle planet. One fan in attendance recorded it and uploaded to YouTube.
