Need weekend plans? We have you covered!
Fun with fried food
We're about one month away from the State Fair of Texas, which means it's nearly time to chow down on fried food. But those who just can't wait are able to get a sneak peek at this year's fried food finalists at the Big Tex Choice Awards. On Sunday, concessionaires will be at Fair Park serving the top 10 fried eats for crowds before a panel of judges decides which ones take the trophies. This year, the fair is giving out three awards -- one each for best taste in sweet and savory categories, and then one for most creative. The sampling kicks off at 2 p.m. and costs $100 to attend.
Kidulting in Deep Ellum
Adults looking for some summer fun should head to Dallas on Sunday for the Deep Ellum Water Balloon Wars. This outdoor event takes place near Trees music venue and includes, obviously, water balloon fights, but also dunk tanks, water slides, food and music. You can also bring a lawn chair and simply sit in a sprinkler section organizers are setting up. Tickets cost $20 for general admission or $40 for VIP. The fun runs noon to 6 p.m., and the event is for adults 18 years old and up.
Fun for the whole fam
If you're in the mood for some free family fun, this weekend is your last opportunity to hit the Reunion Lawn Party. On Saturday, food trucks and live music come to Reunion Lawn, which is the outdoor area where Reunion Arena once stood. There will also be backyard games, beer and more available. That event kicks off at 6:30 p.m.
As a reminder, this is last weekend to take advantage of Dollar Days at the Dallas Arboretum. Entry to the botanical gardens cost just $1 per person. And if you want to visit the children's gardens there, that's just a $1 up-charge.
Tunes, tunes, tunes
For concerts, this weekend we have two big ones in Dallas. On Saturday, R&B soulstress Mary J. Blige is coming to the Music Hall at Fair Park with Lalah Hathaway. The few tickets left range $110 to $131.
Also on Saturday, country group Lady Antebellum is performing at Starplex Pavilion. Tickets for this one run cheaper -- from about $35 for lawn seats to $66 for pit tickets. Kelsea Ballerini and Brett Young open that concert.
Tiney Ricciardi offers her weekend event picks every Thursday morning at 7:40 a.m. on 570AM KLIF.
