The annual three-day celebration brings the best of German culture -- namely, beer and food -- to several indoor and outdoor beer gardens near the Trinity River. In terms of grub, expect a variety of bratwursts, pretzels, crepes, strudels and schnitzels to be washed down with seasonal Oktoberfest brews from German brewery Spaten as well as several local craft breweries.

Beyond food and booze, the Fort Worth Oktoberfest celebration includes a ceremonial tapping of the keg Thursday, September 24, dachshund races, barrel rolling races, stein hoisting competitions, dancing and musical performances from polka staples Brave Combo, Alpenmusikanten, Walburg Boys, and Alpine Village Band, among others.

If working out is more your thing, Oktoberfest always include a few runs. The Fort Worth Oktoberfest is sponsoring a 5K, one-mile fun run and a 15-mile bike ride on Saturday morning, September 26, before the gates to the festival open.

Rahr and Sons Brewing Co., based in Fort Worth, is also bringing back its annual Oktoberfest 5K run/walk. That takes place Saturday, September 26 from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Crazy costumes are strongly encouraged.
