Glowga cocktail hours, Vinyasa beer bashes: Rave-worthy yoga parties

Sweating, panting, bending over: It's either a date gone really well or ... oh, wait you're exercising. Some people genuinely love working out. Others suffer through for the sake of a hot (or passable) body. This summer, the local yoga community plans to put these dichotomous folks in the same room, toss in some alcohol and try to make a party baby.

It's a proven formula. Runners have long congregated half-clothed and glistening around the craft beer scene. They've even spawned a whimsical archetype known as drinkers with a running problem. Now, certain yogis are sloughing some of the practice's seriousness for seriously fun cocktail parties and beer bashes.

The divine awesome in us recognizes and acknowledges the divine awesome in them:

Vital Fitness Studio and One Love Dallas have devised a hella creative way to align your Third Eye chakra under the watchful glare, er glance, of Downtown's famed Eye sculpture on July 16. Starting off with a 90-minute outdoor yoga class, the evening soon gets cranked to a full-blown party. There will be glow sticks, music by DJ Jeff Mitchell and complimentary cocktails.

Beer and spandex may seem like natural enemies, but if it's hops you crave, Collective Brewing Project in Fort Worth has worked out a peace treaty: Get the blood flowing before the taps do.

The monthly beer yoga series offers air-conditioned yoga in the taproom as an overture to sampling Collective's current brews. Bring your own mat and water bottle, and $20 at the door gets you an hour of practice and two pints with like-minded yogis.

Want to stick around awhile? CBP opens to the public from 2-9 p.m. on Saturdays, and you can fill up growlers and crowlers of its heavy hitting brews.

Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga at Sunday Funday

Duuuude. This is not for the faint of heart. The Yoga Project Fort Worth offers one of the more extreme -- and slightly intimidating -- ways to party on yoga style.

Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga is exactly what it sounds like, on the Trinity River in Fort Worth. The 90-minute class starts at 11:30 a.m. on Fridays and at 1 p.m. on Sundays, coalescing with Panther Island's weekly Sunday Funday series. Classes are led by TYP instructors, and the $30 class fee includes paddle board rental and a life preserver.

If it sounds challenging, it absolutely is. Standing on the board intensifies core workout and helps experienced yogis perfect form by highlighting imbalanced poses (you know, that's when you tip over). But, don't worry: Falling is fine with a watery safety net. That's why the peaceful practice is offered to all levels, even beginners.

Not near Forth Worth? Check out DFW Surf, with SUP Yoga classes at Lake Grapevine and Lake Lewisville.

Flow in the dark glowga

Grit Fitness' motto is "no grit no pearl" and that is quite clever in a city known for rockin' its share of Tiffany. That philosophy goes a bit deeper, however; founder Brittani Rettig believes any workout can be more enjoyable with the right soundtrack and a "rock star" instructor, and so far it's worked for the young studio.

Grit will celebrate its six month anniversary with a free Flow in the Dark Glowga party on the 33rd floor of the W Hotel. Guests are encouraged to wear "electrifying" colors for a Vinyasa flow session before cranking it up with DJ IE, a cash bar and dance party until midnight. The event's free, but RSVPs are required.
