Four places in D-FW where you can make your own masterpiece

If your finger-paint dreams were dashed shortly after elementary school, get back to it, Picasso. You can still leave your mark on the art scene. The DIY revolution is booming with businesses that help beginning artists paint, string, fire and even print one-of-a-kind works.

So make that masterpiece you'll leave to your estate one day-or at least hang secretly in your closet for your admiration only. Check out a few favorite businesses where craftiness is happiness.

Beads of Splendor

Stop waiting for someone to put a ring on it. Make your own ring. Or bracelet or necklace whatever else you can learn to make through one of the many classes offered at Beads of Splendor. Coming soon are classes on basic wire wrapping, bead stringing, bracelet soldering, and even macramé. For extra spirited craft making, try one of the Wine + Gems events coming up, like “(Get) Hammered Festoons” on April 21. And, you guessed it, one of the craft supplies is wine.

Oil & Cotton

If you like playing with Instagram filters, try a photo processing class at Oil & Cotton. The “Historic and Alternative Photographic Processes” class by Rachel Rushing (April 19-26) is a good bet, but you can’t go wrong with leatherworking or screen printing workshops. There are even upholstery classes from time to time, which teach you how to upholster that old estate sale chair you were going to “spruce up” three years ago. And then there’s calligraphy, casting, printmaking, painting with natural dyes, and much more. Check it all out online.

"Take a drink!" or so you'll be told if you're caught criticizing one of your imperfect brush strokes at Painting with a Twist. It's a rookie move and the upbeat instructors are ready to call you out and then help out with that smudge or blotch. Most of the paintings featured are pretty easy for beginners and some have fun themes, like painting your pet or a romantic double canvas combo for couples. BYOWine, or whatever you're drinking or munching on for this big paint party.

Le Painted Grape

A local art teacher-turned-businesswoman opened Le Painted Grape, where anyone can customize chalices and goblets with gobs of gorgeous color. For about $30 a person, you get all the supplies you need to paint glasses with a theme. The theme changes each month, but a popular one is the flower stem. The wine stem gets painted green and colorful petals are painted around the opening of the chalice. For only a little extra you can buy wine and snacks on site to go with your wine glass painting.
