Rangers fans, they heard you: Ballpark gets birria quesadillas from Hurtado Barbecue

They’re not Hurtado’s famous birria tacos. But they’re close.

After the Texas Rangers won the World Series in 2023, Hurtado Barbecue owner Brandon Hurtado stopped selling his famous birria tacos inside the ballpark in Arlington.

His reason was this: Hurtado already had the longest concessions line in the building, and part of that wait was because of the birria tacos.

Fresh off the World Series win, lines at the Hurtado stand can still be long, but the owner has decided to sell birria quesadillas in place of the birria tacos starting May 13, 2024, because of consumer demand.

The quesadillas, $16.99 each, are stuffed with smoked and braised brisket and melted shredded cheese. Cooks griddle each flour tortilla to order, which shouldn’t take as long to crisp as the corn tortillas on the tacos did, Hurtado said.

That’s news to Dallas Morning News Rangers Insider Evan Grant, who has said that Hurtado’s now-gone birria tacos were the best option in the ballpark. Fans, too, were disappointed the birria tacos wouldn’t be available in the 2024 season. Hurtado says his birria quesadillas are the next best thing.

“I want to give fans what they want, but get it out quickly,” Hurtado said.

“I think this will be the answer.”

Hurtado will remove the Milanesa tacos from the menu when the birria quesadillas become available. The Milanesa tacos were made with chicken-fried brisket topped with Hatch chile gravy and chile de arbol. They were one of the best bites among the new 2024 concessions. But Hurtado said they were often inconsistent.

On the same day birria quesadillas will become available, Hurtado will open its second stand in the ballpark, an express stand in section 201. It will sell poblano Oaxaca sausages and brisket nachos only.

Hurtado Barbecue stand inside Globe Life Field in Arlington sells food during Texas Rangers home games only. The original barbecue stand remains, in section 141, and express stand will open May 13, 2024 in section 201.
