Gay bakers from Dallas score spot on Netflix show

Two Dallas sugar daddies are getting their 60 minutes of fame.

Ashton Snyder and Lio Botello, who co-own a Dallas company called Sugar Daddy's Cakery, will be on the Netflix show Sugar Rush when the second season premieres on July 26. The episode they're featured in focuses on the influence of social media — a timely topic for the engaged couple who found one another on Instagram.

"I slid into his DMs," Snyder says of their digital meet-cute, "and here we are." The social media theme doesn't end there: The two launched Sugar Daddy's Cakery in November 2017, and a little over a year later, it was on Instagram where a producer for Sugar Rush found the Sugar Daddies.

"They DM'ed us after reviewing our work," Botello says.

On the show, the couple will compete against three groups for a $10,000 prize. Contestants are eliminated each round after baking cupcakes, then confections and then cakes. The Dallas bakers couldn't say what happens on the show, but a teaser video from Netflix shows Snyder and Botello assembling a cake. So, spoiler: Our local guys get to the final round in their episode.

Back at home, Snyder and Botello's cake-making business is mostly operated out of their apartment in Uptown Dallas. Snyder is the chief baker, but he rarely gets to try his finished products. He suffers from celiac disease and says that if he tastes any of his gluten-filled treats, he has to spit it out. Enter Botello, who works full-time managing an insurance agency and is happy to help when he gets home: "I taste and eat everything!" he says.

Both bakers say they're dedicated to health and fitness — and Snyder says Botello's fit photos on Instagram were one of the reasons he was attracted to him.

"Well, a picture is worth a thousand words," Snyder says, speaking about their initial Instagram interaction. "I liked that, through his photographs, it portrayed he was dedicated to himself, his well-being and fitness."

The two plan to get married in March 2020.

Since they filmed Sugar Rush in early 2019, the men have made dozens of sweets, including a 3-foot-long unicorn cake and a giant spread of desserts for drag queen Alyssa Edwards' Fourth of July party.

"It was Alyssa Edwards, so of course it was bigger than Texas," Snyder recalls. Edwards is best known for her appearances on RuPaul's Drag Race, though she also stars in a Netflix docu-series called Dancing Queen. In essence, they're now Netflix peers.

"It was nice to finally get to do something for one of her events," Snyder says.

Sugar Rush premieres at 2 a.m. July 26 on Netflix. (The entire six-episode season drops at once and the Dallas bakers say: "We'll be up.")
