This is a surprise: Urban Taco in Uptown is closing, becoming Velvet Taco

Urban Taco in Uptown is closing and Velvet Taco will take its place.

Quickly, too: Urban Taco closes Saturday, March 31 after dinner. The building will stay shuttered through the summer and is expected to reopen as Velvet Taco in September, says a spokesman.

Urban Taco had been a steady spot on a block of McKinney Avenue that has seen great turnover, especially since the Loon was bulldozed to become a CVS. Urban Taco creator Markus Pineyro says in a statement they "have outgrown the location" after nine years.

Pineyro and his team recently moved his other Urban Taco in Dallas from one Mockingbird Station address to a bigger one in the same complex. He also founded Del Sur Restaurant Group, which now manages Hook Line & Sinker in Uptown and its offshoot, Hookline in Plano.

The Velvet Taco that will replace it is a growing, D-FW-based company that first launched near Henderson Avenue and Central Expressway, in a vibrant area. Velvet Taco has since grown to several shops in D-FW plus two in Houston, two in Austin and one in Chicago, according to the website.

Velvet Taco is known for its late hours: Are you up at 4 a.m.? Because VT is. It's also known for its Backdoor Chicken, a $20 rotisserie chicken (with some sides) sold from a back or side door.

The company comes from D-FW-bred Front Burner Restaurants, which operates Legacy Hall, Whiskey Cake, Sixty Vines and more. Here's a look at some of Velvet Taco's food:
