Healthful restaurant True Food Kitchen now open in Plano

When True Food Kitchen opened its first restaurant in Dallas in 2013, it was the talk of the well-heeled town.

"True Food Kitchen is so popular you'd think the chef was giving away free kale," our restaurant critic Leslie Brenner wrote in her two-star review of the restaurant in January 2014. "Well-turned-out diners with a distinctly Park Cities or Preston Hollow air are packing the place noon and night, gobbling up inside-out quinoa burgers and sipping antioxidant drinks with names like Medicine Man or Green Arnie like there's no tomorrow."

While it's easier to get a table at the True Food in Dallas today, it still appeals to crowds of people watching their waistlines.

Now, Plano is getting in on the health-food fun.

True Food Kitchen's fourth-in-Texas restaurant opens at Legacy West near the Dallas North Tollway and Legacy Drive in Plano on Tuesday, May 23.

TFK's "thing" is that it has options for those eating gluten free, organic, vegan or vegetarian. It focuses on a menu created by Dr. Andrew Weil, whose anti-inflammatory diet includes whole grains, beans, vegetables, good-for-you fats and protein, according to WebMD. It doesn't outlaw alcohol, whew: Weil recommends the Citrus Skinny Margarita made with organic tequila. Those who imbibed too much might want the Hangover Rx: pineapple and orange juice, honey and coconut water.

True Food Kitchen is a sibling restaurant to Flower Child, another health-focused place that opened recently in Dallas.

The new True Food in Plano is opening at Legacy West, home to a Shake Shack burger jointDel Frisco's Double Eagle Steak House, a coming-soon Sprinkles cupcake (and Sprinkles cupcake ATM) and more. True Food is moving in because Plano is a fast-growing area, Weil says.

"Plano has the right demographic for True Food Kitchen and an exciting energy," he says.

Diners can choose how healthy they want to be at TFK: The menu includes pizzas -- some stocked with veggies, some not; bowls -- one with "ancient grains," another with noodles; a quinoa burger; a  turkey burger; and chicken and fish dishes. Weil lists the spaghetti squash casserole and the tempeh sandwich with vegan mayo as two items he often orders.
