Old Deep Ellum gas station to reopen as beer and taco joint

Add another to the list of restaurants expected to open in Deep Ellum.

Bowls and Tacos, as it's called, will be a fish taco and poke joint from the team behind Braindead Brewing, according to D Magazine. The owners recently signed a lease on a former Gulf gas station near the intersection of Commerce Street and Exposition Avenue in hopes of opening by the end of the year.

"It's like a crummy joke in Dallas that you have to go to an old gas station to get a taco," co-owner Sam Wynne told D. "So we got a funky old gas station."

Wynne said the idea spawned from consistently being asked where to find tacos in Deep Ellum. There is a Fuzzy's, but Wynne saw an opportunity to add more options to the scene.

As for libations, there will be plenty of beer to wash down the goods. Wynne told GuideLive the plan calls for a few taps of Braindead's craft beer alongside some Mexican lagers and domestics in bottles and cans. He envisions it more like a typical icehouse, a laid-back joint with a service counter and patio seating.

The bar won't have a liquor license, but local bar maven Mate Hartai is reportedly making a "vermouth and fortified wine version on a margarita," according to D Mag.
