Deep Ellum is quickly becoming a delicious place. Once (and still) the neighborhood with tons of pizza shops, Deep Ellum also now has a Hungarian restaurant, a ramen shop, a renowned barbecue joint and so much more. Newcomer Amsterdam Falafelshop, which serves Middle Eastern food, is open as of Friday, May 13.

It's the first Amsterdam Falafelshop in Texas. The company launched more than 10 years ago in Washington, D.C.

Halal could be Dallas' hot food trend this summer

Amsterdam Falafelshop is a fast-casual restaurant that sells falafel, a traditionally Middle Eastern dish made of fried chickpeas. Beyond that vegetarian option, the shop will also sell shawarma, which is similar to a gyro and is made with shaved lamb.

In fact: Halal lamb is becoming much easier to find in Dallas-Fort Worth.  A halal chicken and rice shop called Big Guys is expected to open soon, also in Deep Ellum.

Orders of falafel or halal lamb can come in a sandwich or a bowl. Customers then walk down the line and add choose-your-own toppings such as hummus, yogurt dill and pickles. The small menu also includes frieten (fries) that come with a variety of sauces such as curried ketchup.
