Velvet Taco in Dallas expands hours astonishingly late -- to 5 a.m.

When it's 5 a.m., go-getters might be hopping out of bed, maybe for a run. Not on the corner of Henderson Avenue and Central Expressway: Late-night partiers haven't slept a wink yet. And Velvet Taco wants to be their last stop.

Jack Gibbons, the man behind D-FW-born restaurants Whiskey Cake, Mexican Sugar and more, confirms the Velvet Taco in Dallas will stay up until 5 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

To put it in simpler terms: This is the Friday and Saturday night crowd who is up so late it's needing a bite during the hours on Saturday and Sunday mornings others might call "breakfast."

The Dallas restaurant used to stay up until 4 a.m., but that wasn't late enough.

Velvet Taco in Dallas tested out the 5 a.m. closing time on St. Patrick's Day weekend in Dallas, and "it was a total score," Gibbons says. Eventually, Velvet Taco will likely be open 24 hours a day, he says. For now, the later hours only affect the Velvet Taco in Dallas.

So what do people eat at 4 in the morning at Velvet Taco? The tater tots -- served with an over-easy egg, goat cheese, cheddar, avocado cream, chili butter and bacon -- are popular. (And also: a drunk person's everything, am I right?) The tikka masala chicken taco is also ordered regularly in the late-night hours, Gibbons says, though it's also the most popular item all day long.

Beyond restaurants in Dallas that are open 24 hours, we don't know of any open until 5 a.m. "It's just so underserved," Gibbons says. Tweet us at @guidelive if you know of other restaurants staying up that late.
