Portion sizes may seem larger here than they appear, but the regular-sized Salata bowl is bigger than most people's heads.

We all want to stick to our New Year's resolutions to eat healthier, but the struggle to eat out is real. The biggest gamble you make is ordering a salad. Will it be full of hearty greens and savory protein and grains? Or will you get another washed-out wedge with a few red onions and store-bought croutons?

To find a restaurant with salads sure to satisfy, check out a few local favorites.

The easiest way to ensure your salad is satisfying: Choose the ingredients yourself. Texas-based restaurant chain Salata considers itself "the next generation salad bar" because unlike other soup-and-salad chains, Salata has a "fresh-first" clean ingredient commitment to its guests. (Think Chipotle without that little E-coli issue.)

Guests can choose from deliciously-marinated proteins like antibiotic-free chicken cuts that come in pesto, herb, spicy chipotle and Asian barbecue flavors. Toss those choices up with more veggies and house-made dressing options for oodles of cool meal ideas.

Snappy Salads

I've been known to jump through a few pineapple hoops to get to this salmon salad at Snappy Salads.

If your ability to combine ingredients at the salad bar usually fails, let the menu be your guide at Snappy Salads. These salads also come in good-sized portions -- so good that Chef Chris Dahlander's slogan for the restaurant is, "So good, even guys like our salads." The Sautéed Salmon with ginger vinaigrette and cilantro never disappoints. The Grilled Avocado lets you take in all the healthy fats you need. The vitamin-packed dried cherries and quinoa in the Bam*Bam Salad will taste heavenly to health nuts.

Y.O. Ranch Steakhouse

Why, oh, why go to Y.O. Ranch Steakhouse and order anything but a steak platter? Because you can have your steak and enjoy even more delicious mix-ins when you order the Chipotle Sirloin Caesar Salad. Strips of tender sirloin top a bed of fresh lettuce that's decked out with roasted peppers, smoked corn, Cojita cheese and fried onion rings, all tossed in a chipotle-garlic Caesar dressing.

A crab cake feels right at home in Texas when dressed up with avocado, sweet corn and toasted pecans. IVY Kitchen mixes up some funky combinations in the salad section of the menus. The Crab Cake Salad can be found on the lunch or brunch menus. It might seem smaller than the others, but it packs a lot of protein and fiber without piling on fried toppers or refined grains.

Spiral Diner & Bakery

We know it's not summer, but we promise not to cry if the Super Summer Salad comes back on Spiral Diner's menu soon.

This last one goes out to the patient vegans who made it to the end of this feature. You probably already understand Spiral Diner's awesomeness if you've been there and ordered the Nachos Supremo and all the other dairy-free or gluten-free delights. Have you ever tried one of the salads, though? Hey, I get it. But The Big Texas Salad with any protein add-ons will rock your world. If you haven't been before, ask for the daily special, too. There are more than a few seasonal salads we can't wait to fork into again.
