Take that, Starbucks: Dallas' White Rock Coffee annual pumpkin spice drinks return

Note: This story was originally published in 2015, but pumpkin spice items are back at White Rock Coffee today.

Original story: It might still be close to 100 degrees outside, but as far as the coffee drinkers of Dallas are concerned, it is fall, which means coffeeshops will be overflowing with pumpkin aroma.

"It has and always has had real pumpkin and fresh spices and sugar," said Nancy Baker, owner of White Rock Coffee.

Worth mentioning: Starbucks recently changed their pumpkin spice recipe to include real pumpkin for the first time. The chain also will not begin serving the oh-so-trendy PSLs until September 8.

There are no preservatives in White Rock Coffee's pumpkin spice flavoring and it is gluten free and vegan friendly (unlike Starbucks').

The flavor is available to be included in hot or cold drinks. For those looking for espresso mixed with autumnal pumpkin flavors, Baker recommends the pumpkin spice latte — a classic.

For those looking for something sweet and savory, she recommends the pumpkin chai tea latte paired with a hand-rolled pumpkin scone with sweet icing on top. Also included in the seasonal offerings: from-scratch pumpkin mini loaves and pumpkin cheesecake.

"It is one of the most luscious things on the planet," Baker said about the flavor. "It will really put you in the spirit of fall."

White Rock Coffee is no new kid on the block. They have been slinging Joe for the past decade. And Baker said, the pumpkin spice flavor debuted that first year of business and they haven't changed the recipe since.

For now, the three Dallas locations are everything pumpkin, but it won't last forever. The pastries will change for the holiday season, and the pumpkin spice syrup for beverages will likely be available until mid-January — just so everyone can get their fix.
