Big Tex Choice Awards

The State Fair of Texas' annual food competition is open to the public again this year as a fundraiser for the fair's Youth Scholarship Fund. For $100 per person, be among the first to taste the eight competing dishes and see which will be named most creative and best-tasting. All finalists — Chicken Fried Lobster With Champagne Gravy, Cowboy Corn Crunch, Deep Fried Alligator's Egg Nest, Fernie's Holy Moly Carrot Cake Roly, Fried Beer-Battered Buffalo, Lone Star Pork Handle, Pretzel-Crusted Pollo Queso and Smoky Bacon Margarita — will be for sale at the fair, which opens Sept. 25.

GrapeFest Wine Dinners 

Before the festival opens on Sept. 17, GrapeFest — A Wine Experience will host a series of four-course wine dinners at Grapevine restaurants. On Aug. 29 at 6 p.m., taste wines from Oregon's A to Z Wineworks at Hilton DFW Lakes, 1800 State Highway 26 East, Grapevine. $65 per person. Messina Hof Grapevine Winery will be featured at Mac's on Main, 909 S. Main St., Grapevine, on Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. $85 per person. Then on Sept. 4 at 6 p.m., Argentine wines will be showcased at Grand Met at Grand Hyatt DFW, D/FW Airport. $90 per person.

Ten 50 BBQ Birthday Block Party 

In honor of the first anniversary of its opening, this Richardson barbecue restaurant will offer free banana pudding to dine-in guests (one freebie per receipt, while supplies last). The celebration, Aug.28 from 4 to 10 p.m., will also include burnt ends for sale, drink specials, an appearance by classic-rock station KZPS-FM (92.5) from 3 to 7 p.m., and music by the Big Daddy Band from 7 to 10 p.m. 1050 N. Rhone Valley Wine Chats

Crú Food and Wine Bar in Dallas' West Village and Allen's Watters Creek at Montgomery Farm will host a tasting of red, white and rosé wines from France's Rhône Valley for $20 per person. Last call for DFW Restaurant Week

More than 50 restaurants will offer three-course, fixed-price dinners for $35 or $45 per person through Aug. 30, and about a dozen will also offer a two-course lunch for $20 per person. For each meal purchased, 20 percent of the price will be donated to either the North Texas Food Bank or LenaPope in Fort Worth. See a list of which restaurants are still participating.
